Who says you need a large dog like a Rottie or Mastiff for protection to guard your house? Some small dogs, despite their size, make excellent watchdogs.
The following small breeds are known to stand their guard and ward off potential intruders with their barking:
Small Breeds for Protection
The Miniature Pinscher is often dubbed the quickest of the toy breeds, and their assertive, confident nature can make them intense at times. Miniature Pinschers are very territorial and will often show this with a shrill bark. They will also often turn their back on strangers and kick their rear feet up at them.
A Chihuahua’s temperament depends entirely on the genetics of the parents. Some Chihuahuas are very timid, yet the majority are confident and feisty. Their highly-strung temperament results in neurotic behaviour towards strangers and excessive barking that can’t often be overcome with training.
Whether it’s the Border Terrier, Westie, Jack Russell or Cairn, all terriers just love to amplify their voice. Despite their small size, they’re fearless and tough. Working terriers have been bred to bark, and their stubborn, alert nature means that they can easily slip into an excessive barking routine. We understand that the noisy nature of these little pups can sometimes get annoying as the barking can, at times, be constant. The only way around this is professional training.
