The Tihar festival in Nepal is a five day celebration, that takes place alongside Diwali (the festival of light). It’s held annually in Nepal, and is between the 9th-13th of November this year. The festival celebrates the relationship between dogs and humans, animals and plants.

What happens during Kukur Tihar?
During Kukur Tihar, dogs are thanked for their love and loyalty. Nepalese pups are offered flower garlands and all dogs are decorated with a Tika, a red paste made from abir, yoghurt and rice. The tika acts as a blessing to those who encounter the dog during Kukur Tihar.

Once in their celebratory attire, all dogs are offered dog treats, pieces of fruit and even delicious chicken and rice meals.

Every year, the talented Service and Police dogs at Nepal’s Central Police Dog Training School perform some of their cutest tricks and parade around, receiving many ear scratches and belly rubs as a thank-you for their hard work.
