A nickname of ‘Pom Pom’? The Pomeranian sure has earned it. With a face almost obscured by an explosion of glorious fluff, this breed’s unmistakable look is created by the fusion of a soft undercoat and rougher outer coat. History
The clue to the Pomeranian’s cold-weather-friendly fur coat lies in its heritage. It’s said to have descended from the Spitz family of dogs, which you’d have seen pulling sleds in the Arctic once upon a time. The region of Pomerania spanned modern-day Germany and Poland – this is where the Pomeranian was bred down to size.
Health
Pomeranians tend to live for somewhere between 12 and 16 years.
This breed is prone to knee problems, heart problems, eye infections, skin irritations and tooth trouble. A diet of dry dog food can help prevent tooth decay and early tooth loss.
Characteristics
The “dainty little extrovert”
The folks over at The Kennel Club coined this phrase to describe the lively yet dignified Pomeranian. And to be honest, we couldn’t put it better ourselves.
Small Dog Syndrome
As with all toy dogs, this breed is at risk of developing behaviour problems if not adequately socialised. A firm but gentle hand will prevent yours from becoming overly demanding.
TLC
Pomeranians need daily exercise in the form of a short walk. Their double coat also needs some tender loving care, especially during periods of shedding.
Training
Intelligence is a defining feature of the Pomeranian. This is good news for anyone who wants to teach their’s a trick or three, alongside a good dose of positive reinforcement training.
Housebreaking
Pomeranians are relatively easy to housebreak.
