The rugged, rainforest-wrapped central American country Costa Rica is the place of dreams. What with its average annual temperature of 25°C, waterfalls, beaches and national dish Gallo Pinto, now there’s another reason to visit this paradise: a dog sanctuary!
The dog sanctuary, dubbed Territorio de Zaguates (Land of the Strays) is located in the mountains of Santa Barbara and is home to approximately 900 rescue pups. The dog sanctuary is run by volunteers who let the dogs run free in the green mountains during the day, and take care in feeding, watering and sheltering them at night.
Each pup is recognised and given a unique name, and the public are encouraged to join them on the daily hound hike to help with the adoption process.
After seeing this, we’ve all decided we’re off to book our tickets to the Costa Rican dog sanctuary now. I guess we’ll see you there?
