The Scoop – Dog News Pupdate Vol. 12

On top of a couple of top-notch giveaways this week, what really caught our imagination this week were the stories about both drones and good old aeroplanes coming to the aid of canines.

1.  Ugliest Dog in The World is a Hero

At 12 years old, Mugly the Chinese Crested has now won another award. The first was for being Britain’s Ugliest Dog. However, since winning, he has made multiple TV appearances and turned his paw towards helping adults and children with disabilities.  At the National Pet Show this week, Mugly won ‘Most Heroic Hound’ at the SuperDogs awards. Fugly or not, Mugly is making a difference to people’s lives.

2. Drones Do Dogs a Favour

Drones and Intel may not be words you immediately associate with dog welfare. However what you probably are familiar with is the fact that many dogs suffer from extreme anxiety during the holidays because of fireworks.  The frightening explosive pops can wreak havoc on your dog’s nerves. We have previously covered ways in which you can prepare your pooch for upcoming festivities. Well, Intel has been working on a project which could one day eradicate fireworks as we know them – replacing them with drones, programmed to create a fantastic light show in the night sky. Skip to minute 3:40 in the video above to get an idea of what is already possible.

3.  Dogs Catch a Flight in Canada to Escape Wildfire

Last Saturday, a wildfire threatened the lives of the inhabitants of Fort McMurray in Alberta, Canada. The fire is still going (live updates here) and multiple communities have been evacuated.  Thankfully, before the fire reached Fort McMurray, Canadian North Airlines came to the rescue and whisked the evacuees, including 19 dogs, 5 cats and 2 turtles to safety. 4. Dog Bacteria Misunderstood?

We came across an interesting infographic by a place for animals that we had to share as it suggests there may well be  benefits to sharing some microbes with our best friends (dogs of course). Considering that between cuddles, belly rubs and many sloppy kisses, the exchange if microbes is inevitable, we can only hope that our germs and theirs aren’t causing harm to either party.
