From surfing dogs to dog cafes, it’s been an exciting (and sometimes sad) week in dog news. We’ve wrapped the top stories up in a handy little news doggy bag, it’s the Scoop!
Surf’s up, dogue!
Making a big slash in dog news this week was the World Dog Surfing Championships. Perhaps our favourite doggy sporting event of the year, they took place this week near sunny San Francisco. Curious how it works? Dogs are judged first and paw-most on whether they catch the wave and how long they can ride it for. But there’s also consideration given for a sense of style and confidence. Some dogs even perform tricks while riding the wave.
Okay, so watching the video above proves that the dogs are mostly passengers in this particular watersport, they do need a little human helping hand to catch the waves. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t complete surf nuts! As human surfing fanatic Jean recounts, it was her Whippet Beans who showed interest in surfing in the first place, prompting Jean to learn the ways of the waves herself.

Farewell, Woody
Tom Hardy reads the Bedtime Story.
6:50pm, New Year's Eve.
Sorted. @BBC pic.twitter.com/ZhMcl3F0X0— CBeebies Grown-Ups (@CBeebiesHQ) December 30, 2016
If you’ve got young children, or are a huge Tom Hardy fan, which is likely (after all, he was named the second most popular dog owning celebrity in our dog-friendly survey back in 2016) you might’ve seen a spotted his Bedtime Stories. They’ve done the rounds on Facebook and other social media sites with a few people wishing that Tom would tuck them in for a bedtime story…
However, the last Bedtime Story that Mr Hardy will read for CBeebies will end on a more sober note, because he’s dedicating his recital of Fleabag by Helen Stephens to his recently departed dog. Woody, full name Woody Woodstock Yamaduki Hardy, was rescued by the actor when he was filming in the USA and the pair have been almost inseparable ever since. Rest in peace, Woody!
The Bedtime Story episode will fittingly air on 26th August, which is National Dog Day.
London’s Pug cafe is finally (almost) here!
Fans of the Pug dog breed will be excited to hear that London’s first ever pop-up Pug cafe is set to open it’s doors in early September. After months of rumours and speculation, and for one day only, Pug owners and fans alike are invited to gather and enjoy the company of cute Pugs, Puggers and Puggerinos on Saturday 9th September.
The cafe will be ‘popping up’ at The Book Club in Shoreditch and tickets can be booked online on Saturday 19th August. It’s all for a good cause, too – money from the event will be donated to The French and Pug Dog Foundation, which works to rescue and rehome Pugs and French Bulldogs.
