It’s never easy to know how to comfort and help a friend coping with the loss of a loved one, and we know that the death of a pet can be just as painful as losing a human. Knowing when they need space or when to cheer them up is a difficult balance to achieve, especially if you have never been through grief yourself.
There is nothing worse than feeling helpless when you have a friend or family member in need.
If someone you know is currently dealing with the death of a pet, here are some important things to keep in mind that will help you support them through this difficult time:
Let them know that you’re always there for them
How to Help Someone Coping with the Death of a Pet
Just saying that you are there for them if they need you can go a long way. Be genuine. Just say it sincerely with compassion.
Be aware that they may need some alone time at first to get their feelings under control. Once you’ve told them that you are there for them, let them come to you if they need to open their heart.
Don’t make it about you
It seems to be human nature to make conversations revolve around us instead of listening and showing empathy towards others.
This usually happens without us even noticing, so try to remember that you are here as a pair of ears only. Don’t try to always respond to what they’re saying or compare it to something you’ve been through. You may think it helps, but chances are they just want you to listen.
Help out with the little things
Even the most insignificant household tasks can be overwhelming when you aren’t feeling well. Offer to help them out with chores or grocery shopping if you can, or even drive them to work if it’s not too out of your way.
However, it’s also important that their mind stays busy while they are mourning their furry companion. If they have nothing to do, they will remain in a state of sadness and could risk overthinking the tragedy.
Take them to places and do something new
When some time has passed, it’s time to slowly start moving on to a new chapter in life. Some people find that the best way to do that is to build new memories; ones so strong and so great that they fill you both with joy.
Take this opportunity to try out new things – go on a journey or any kind of adventure! Get out there and do something that you’ve always wanted to do together. Now is the time, it will be incredibly useful and appreciated.
Time heals all things… but not without help
It’s impossible to say how long grief lasts because it depends on each individual. But in the end, only great memories of their pet will remain, and they will be ready to move on. Maybe even consider adopting a new companion, giving a less fortunate pet a great new life.
When this time comes, they will certainly be grateful for your help, and you can be sure that they will be there for you in return if you ever need someone to lean on.
