Got a sensitive nose? Whippets are famous for being clean, easy to care for and generally free from doggy smells. This lean and lovely dog looks and behaves a little like a mini Greyhound. Which isn’t surprising, seeing as they’re distant relatives. This breed is a sporty, sensitive soul with a who needs plenty of exercise in the form of running and walking. Here’s our take on the traits of the Whippet.

History
The Whippet is thought to have been the result of a Greyhound crossed with some kind of hunting terrier. The resulting combination of speed and good sight led to the breed’s popularity as both a hunting companion and a racing dog. They were especially favoured among the working classes and were supposedly referred to as the ‘poor man’s race horse’.
Health
Whippets are prone to deafness and eye problems. Regular eye tests are recommended.
Characteristics
The faithful friend
Are you looking for a dog that adjusts well to family life and isn’t a nightmare to train? Look no further! The Whippet is known for being gentle and obedient, as well as good with children.
Indoorsy
While Whippets need a fair bit of exercise, including sprints off-leash in an enclosed area, their lack of fatty tissue means they can get cold quickly and need to be kept snuggled up indoors the rest of the time.
Hypoallergenic
OK, not quite. But the Whippet’s short coat and the light oil produced by their skin means they shed very little and don’t usually cause problems for people with mild allergies.
Training
Training a Whippet probably won’t be the hardest thing you ever do in your life. They’re affectionate and keen to please. Their high level of intelligence dictates a need for plenty of variety in their training.
Housebreaking
Housebreaking seems to vary on a dog-by-dog basis, with some owners finding it easy and others less so.
