Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, begins on the eve of the New Year and ends on the 15th February (the Lantern Festival).
If you’re wondering why the dates change year to year, it’s because the calendar’s based on the Lunisolar (depending on the moon phase and the time during the solar year).
A different animal represents each of the twelve sections of the year (much like the twelve months in the Western calendar). This year indicates the Year of the Monkey.
Oddly enough, even though they’re completely different species, there are some dogs that actually resemble our primate precursors:
Affenpinscher
Derived from the German ‘Affe’ for ‘monkey’ the Affenpinscher bares an uncanny resemblance to a cheeky little monkey! There’s a reason why they’re nicknamed the ‘Monkey Terrier‘!
Shih Tzu
Not only do Shih Tzus look super-cute when they’ve had a puppy cut, but you can’t deny how similar they are to baby monkeys. We’re glad Winnie Cooper’s humans think the same as us here!
Brussels Griffon
This cheeky little fella’s got a real mischievous look on his face, much like this young Gibbon.
