Scientific research has found that there really are some dog breeds that prefer humans more than dogs due to evolution. As a rule of thumb, dogs of the Pastoral, Toy and Working Kennel Club breed standards best fit this description.
These breeds tend to develop an incredibly strong bond with their owners, however, this trait also means that they need a lot of attention from humans for both physical and mental stimulation. If not attended to, they can be more prone to suffer from separation anxiety.
Here are 10 dog breeds that prefer human companionship over dogs:
1. Border Collie
The smartest dog breed is also one of the most clingy. Border Collies are workaholics who live to please their owners. When you start working on obedience and training they learn very fast and remember for the rest of their life.
2. Australian Shepherd
With a personality similar to the Border Collie, Australian Shepherd’s are also extremely focused on their owners. They tend to completely ignore other dogs if their human is around. They are also known for whinning or misbehaving on purpose to get attention from people when they are bored.
3. German Shepherd
These brave dogs strongly believe that their role is to protect their family. In their minds, German Shepherd’s are constantly “on duty” and never stray very far from their owners. They will gladly play with other dogs, but always keep a close eye on their human.
4. Samoyed
These big, fluffy pups think that they are lapdogs. Samoyeds love to snuggle up to their humans or lay by their side peacefully. They aren’t the most playful breed, but their love of ear scratches and belly rubs knows no bounds.
5. Bichon Maltese
Bichon Maltese are popular companions for a reason! They are like little children, always looking for their owner’s attention. Incredibly loving, they can, however, become a bit jealous and protective of their owners, especially around other dogs, so it’s important to socialise and educate them well!
6. Pug
Forget play-fighting or running around with other dogs, Pugs much prefer a fun game of fetch or a long walk by the side of their favourite human. They also love to take naps on anyone’s lap or just sit next to their owner on a bench and people watch.
7. Poodle
Regardless of the size (toy, standard, giant…) Poodles are people dogs. These very smart pups just want to make their humans happy and spend time by their side. They are highly trainable and loyal, but that doesn’t stop them from being a bit stubborn from time to time!
8. English Bulldog
These big guys know that high speed chases at the park isn’t their forte. English Bulldogs are notorious for royally ignoring any canine presence around them and just marching on; following in the footsteps of their owner. Even if you have a gigantic garden for them to explore, they will always prefer to lay at (on) your feet.
9. Doberman Pinscher
Much like the German Shepherd, Doberman’s never take their eyes off their owners. These loyal and athletic dogs will much rather go running or hiking with you than go on a puppy playdate. At home, nothing makes them happier than stretching out on a bed next to their human.
10. Akita
Considered by many to be the most loyal breed of dogs, Akitas rarely play with other dogs, or even with humans for that matter! That doesn’t mean that they aren’t attached to their owners, however. This gigantic dog just prefers to observe and make sure their owner’s are okay.
