Here are the week’s dog related stories that caught our attention last week. If you’ve got another dog scoop for us, drop us a note in the comments.
1. Manchester Airport’s sniffer dogs haven’t got a Scooby Doo
The Home Office has reportedly spent over £1 million on six sniffer dogs for Manchester Airport in the hopes of clamping down on heroin and cocaine smuggling. Fortunately (or unfortunately) the hounds haven’t found any class A drugs at all. They’ve have, however, detected over 150kg of illegal meat. We’re pretty sure our own office pug, Ramón, could do that.
2. Pedigree Spain is producing a kit for millennial dogs
Millennials are all over the social interwebs, and these dogs will be no different. Pedigree has developed a harness they’re calling “The Posting Tail” which consists of a camera, sensors and WiFi connectivity. It will detect when your dog is wagging his tail out of joy, take a photo and then upload to your dog’s social network. We’d forgive you for thinking it’s just an elaborate April Fools stunt, but the video was published on the 13th of April – far too late. Watch it for yourself here.
3. Vet bills are skyrocketing for uninsured pets
Pet owners without insurance are paying through the nose for vet bills. According to insurer’s information, the most common claims are for fractures, spinal injures and head or face injuries. These treatments range in cost from £650 to £810! Insurance policies for dogs cost an average of £260 annually, although this price can vary substantially based on the breed. It is also reported that this cost is almost 30% cheaper for mixed breeds – yet another reason to adopt a rascally mutt from your local shelter.
4. The Dog Café in Los Angeles shows abandoned dogs some love
The Dog Café in Los Angeles has opened it’s doors to people and mutts. The aim is to teach the public about dog homelessness whilst enabling them to interact with shelter dogs in a warm environment. The dogs get much-needed affection and the chance to meet their future forever parents.
5. London is getting a dog brunch pop-up too! (or should it be pup-up)
Not to be left out, we Londonites are getting a chance to brunch with our favourite furry friends too. The Bluebird and Pet Pavilion in Chelsea, West London, are hosting the Bites & Bones Pop-Up from the 27th of April to the 1st of May. Dogs will be treated to a rather tasty three course menu and even a bowl of Pooch Hooch. Click here for the full menu, and visit the Bluebird site here for all the details.
