Each week, we scour the world’s news for tidbits that shine a bit of dog shaped light in to our lives, and wrap it up in a little goody bag that we call The Scoop. These past few weeks have been sad, shocking and scary – but thankfully, there’s always a few stories of hope, and as luck would have it, they feature our favourite furry, four-pawed, waggy-tailed critters.
Hounds rescued from Hurricane Harvey
More than one part of the world has been affected in the last week by hurricanes and flooding, and in Texas, where Hurricane Harvey has left a trail of devastation in its wake, we’ve seen stories of human pitching in together to heroically rescue their doggy neighbours. A dog shelter in New Jersey, over 1,600 miles away, even adopted 70 dogs from rescue centres in Texas, making way for the Texas rescue centres to take in local dogs who’ve been lost and found in the flood waters. Now that’s what we call lending a paw. For more dog rescue stories closer to home, head here.
Otis knows his priorities
Another dog story to make a headlines in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey was the tail of Otis, who apparently went panic shopping for dog food. Yes, that’s right, all by himself. Thankfully, Otis is well known around the neighbourhood and was safe and sound. He went missing after bolting when he was frightened by the storm – the picture snapped of him went crazy on social media. Best of all, Otis is now reunited with his family and won’t be running out of dog food any time soon!
Need some cuteness in your week?
There’s more heartwarming news to be had here. One puppy and a kitten have made huge leaps forward in forging stronger cross-species relations. In possibly the sweetest video you’ll watch all week, the two baby critters paw, cuddle and lick each other (it’s cuter than it sounds!). If you haven’t had your weekly dose of cute, look no further. Turns out dogs and cats might get along, after all. (Dogs are still better than cats, we can prove it.)
There’ll be more news to Scoop next week – come back then!
