When it comes to celebrating your dog’s birthday, what could be more perfect than a dog cupcake recipe that you can both enjoy eating together? There are plenty of human foods that are safe for our pooches to eat as a special treat and, if you’re anything like us, your dog is another member of your family; they share your sofa snuggles, your countryside rambles and your park playtimes – so why not show them who’s a good boy (or girl) and celebrate those special milestones in true style.
Whether you want to bake these tasty homemade treats for birthdays, a puppy party or a rainy day activity, this recipe is suitable for wheat and gluten intolerant pups and contains small quantities sugar – so it’s not too naughty, either.
Please remember that these cupcakes are treats – just like any other dog treat, only feed to your dog in moderation.

Makes 12 dog cupcakes (a.k.a. pupcakes)
- 350g gluten and wheat-free flour
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoons smooth peanut butter

Method:
Pupcake batter
- Preheat the oven to 180˚C (or 350˚F).
- Line a cupcake tip (or yorkshire pudding/ mince pie tin) with cupcake or muffin cases.
- Put all ingredients into a mixing bowl and stir with a wooden spoon until completely mixed.
- Spoon about a tablespoon into each of the muffin cases.
- Place on the middle shelf of your preheated oven for 35 – 40 mins.
- Take out and let cool in tray completely before icing.
Pro tip: use an ice cream scoop to put the perfect amount of cake mix in each case.
Pupcake icing recipe
Ingredients:
- A little gluten and wheat-free flour to thicken if required
- 2 tablespoons smooth peanut butter
- 200g probiotic natural yoghurt with a little honey (if your pooch is lactose intolerant you can substitute this for goat’s milk yoghurt for a dog friendly dairy option)
Method:
- Place peanut butter and yoghurt in a mixing bowl and mix using an electric mixer. Add flour a tablespoon at a time to thicken the mixture depending on consistency required. We added 1 1/2 tablespoons in order to pipe the mixture.
- Either spread the mixture on top of your cooled pupcakes with a knife or pipe.
- Place in the fridge to harden your icing until ready to serve.
Feel free to use a hand whisk if you want to build some muscle. Warning: it’s a tough workout!
Pro tip: use the Wilton M1 nozzle to achieve the rose effect.
Please remember – these are treats and should be given in moderation as part of a healthy, balanced diet. We recommend the following portion sizes:
- 1/4 pupcake for small dogs such as Chihuahuas
- 1/2 pupcake for medium dogs such as Staffordshire Bull Terriers
- 1 pupcake for large dogs such as Great Danes
